Alligator River to Campbell Creek, NC

PB070037

Sunday was a lovely sunny day down the Alligator River – Pungo River Canal.  We started at first light, 6:30, and enjoyed the day.  The canal is more like what I expected of the Dismal Swamp, wide enough for passing slower boats and native vegetation as far as one could see.  Breakfast was delivered to the captain on the bridge at his request about 9:30.  It consisted of two eggs, linguica from Susan, potatoes and toast. Like I said, it was a great day.

We started noticing some of the same boats we saw previously along the way.  It almost seems like a parade heading for Florida.  All kinds of boats, a wooden classic motor yacht, a Nordhaven trawler, a Carver 40 named “Bad Buoy” that got in trouble on the radio when he passed another boat going faster than most and an Endeavour

I’m sorry, I neglected to advise you that this part of our trip included such a primitive environment than the Cruising Guide warned there is no cell phone reception.  Not only did we not have that, we had no email, MiFi, web, etc. Hard to believe this is the U.S!  In fact, we didn’t have service today until we arrived at Morehead City, NC, but I’m ahead of myself.

After eight hours of cruising and traveling 70 miles yesterday we anchored at Campbell Creek.  Then we looked at each other and asked, “Why did we stop so soon?”  We knew we didn’t want to cross the Nuese River until morning when the wind would likely be calmer.  So we found a quiet, calm place with good holding at Campbell Creek just 20 miles north of the Nuese.

As of Sunday afternoon we traveled 244 miles in 4 days. Our goal was 50 miles a day. When we refueled at Alligator River Sat afternoon we didn’t fill our water tanks because the water stains in the bathroom showed browning similar to the coffee brown water (from tannic acid from pine trees) we had been cruising on.  In fact, many boats got a coffee mustache stain on their bows.  No way did I want that in our water tank for showers and dish washing!  The last time we cruised for a week we ran out of water after five days. So being cautious I’m now using paper plates and using the smallest amount of water for washing.

I think I was just tired from all the relaxation so I fell asleep early.
